What happens if it is left

Guttering that has failed along its length is effectively a channel that dumps water at random points down the wall. Because the leaks move about, the wall never gets a chance to dry, and the damage spreads sideways rather than staying in one patch. Repointing and internal replastering start to appear on the bill.

Choosing a profile and size

Half-round is the standard on most post-war housing and copes with an average roof area. Square-line and ogee profiles carry more water for the same visual depth and suit larger, steeper roofs that shed quickly in a downpour, common on the older stone-built properties around Bolton and Ramsbottom.

Deep-flow profiles are the answer where a single downpipe has to serve a long run or a big roof plane. Getting this right matters more than colour: an undersized channel overtops in heavy rain no matter how clean or well-fitted it is.

Brackets, fall and fixings

Full replacement makes sense when the whole system is the same age and condition, when the profile is discontinued and matching is impossible, or when scaffolding or access is being paid for anyway. In that case doing everything in one visit is usually cheaper than three separate jobs.
